Here’s
an incredible stat—a new business is launched every 80 seconds in the U.S. and just about half of
those businesses will survive five or more years. Starting a successful business may
seem like it’s an insurmountable task, but you’d be surprised at
how many resources are available and how many people are willing to
help you. In our post yesterday, we discussed the economic impact of small businesses, which is
why it’s in everybody’s best interest to make sure they
succeed.
Most people know that small businesses are important to our
economy, but may not know just how incredibly important they are.
Take a look at these stats to put things into perspective…
1. A small business is any business with fewer than 500
employees. There are nearly 28 million small businesses and over
75% of those businesses are sole-proprietors. (source: SBA.gov)
2. Small businesses are a huge force in the economy. They
account for 99% of U.S. employer...
National
Small Business Week, sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Association, begins today.
Small business week is especially meaningful to Berry as we have
been working with small businesses around the country for more than
100 years. We wouldn't be where we are today without all of the
wonderful small businesses throughout the U.S. We are proud to have
helped hundreds of thousands of businesses grow as we have
transformed from a provider of Yellow Pages to a full-service
provider of online...
It’s
been just a month since our last update on new Facebook features and
they’ve already made more changes. While it’s really great that
Facebook continues to improve, it can be a little hard to keep up
with everything they are up to. In case you missed the updates,
here’s an overview of the latest Facebook release and features and
how they will impact your small business.
Facebook Replies
The Facebook replies feature is a simple change, but one of the
best ones that I’ve seen in a long time. At...
Every
year on April 22 we recognize Earth
Day as a time to think about the environment. The first
official Earth Day was held in 1970 at a time when many consider
the modern environmental movement to have begun. Events will be
held around the world today to plant trees, clean up trash and
recycle items that may have otherwise ended up in landfills.
Earth Day also marks the fifth anniversary of Berry’s Think Yellow Go
Green recycling program. The program was developed to encourage
residents...
The
annual Think Yellow Go Green recycling campaign sponsored by
Berry
and Hawaiian
Telcom Yellow Pages has launched in the Hawaiian Islands of
Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai. The recycling program is in
its fifth year and is run in partnership with local schools. The
schools and students on each island compete to see who can collect
the most outdated phone directories for recycling.
Think Yellow Go Green keeps directories out of landfills while
offering schools the opportunity to win...
We’re very
excited to have officially hit the one year mark with the Berry

businesses to learn more about advertising. We know that the number
of marketing options, ranging from print solutions such as Yellow
Pages advertising to digital solutions including SEM and SEO, can
be overwhelming. We hope that the Berry Blog has become a trusted
resource to help you stay up-to-date on how to most effectively
promote your business. In...
CRM
Associates has once again conducted their study of
year‐over‐year print Yellow Pages call volumes. The study is based
on over 35,000 ads that remained the same size in the same heading
from 2011 to 2012. The analysis found that on average, advertisers
received an increase of 8% in the number of calls received. This
follows the trend in increased calls that has been seen since
2009. While calls increased overall in 2012, they were
especially strong in smaller markets. Only markets with...

announced several changes that are in the works. We want to make
sure you stay in the loop, so here’s a summary of the changes and
what they mean for your small business marketing plans.
News Feed Gets a Makeover

It has become popular to refer to the Yellow Pages as a
relic of the past, but do you know the facts? In this three part
series we’ll de-bunk three commons myths about the Yellow
Pages.
Hawaiian Telcom
Yellow Pages and Berry kicked off our annual Think Yellow,
Go Greendirectory recycling campaign on the island of
Oahu in January. Each weekend during the month residents were
encouraged to bring their outdated directories to various drop-off
locations throughout the island for recycling. Members of the
Lokahi Giving Project assisted with the recycling effort and
staffed the drop-off locations.
“For the last several years, the success of Think
Yellow, Go Green is a direct result of...
Winters in Anchorage, AK can be long and cold, but that doesn't
mean that they have to be boring. Our team took a break from

It has become popular to refer to the Yellow Pages as a
relic of the past, but do you know the facts? In this three part
series we’ll de-bunk three commons myths about the Yellow
Pages.
Myth #2 – Only “Older People” use the Yellow
Pages
It’s a common perception that only people who are above a
certain age use the Yellow Pages. Many people believe that younger
generations are so technologically savvy that between computers...
It has become popular to refer to the Yellow Pages
as a relic of the past, but do you know the facts? In this three
part series we’ll de-bunk three commons myths about the Yellow
Pages.
Myth #1 – Consumers Only Use the Internet to Find Local
Businesses
Times have certainly changed since the first Yellow Pages
directory was printed in the late 1800s. For many years phone books
were the only available source for finding local business
information. In the last decade the search engines, social...
As
you entered the new year you probably put together a marketing and
advertising plan for your business based on what you've had success
with in the past. You may have even decided that this was the year
to mix things up a little bit and test out some new ways to promote
your products and services. As you thought about your advertising
plans did you ever wonder what other small businesses were planning
to do with their advertising budgets this year?
Throughout the month of January, The Berry
Company and Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages have been leading an
effort to recycle outdated phone directories in Oahu. The annual
program, Think Yellow Go Green, helped to collect over 60 tons of
directories for recycling in 2012. The program coincides with the
January distribution of the Hawaiian Telecom Yellow Pages directory
to Oahu residents.
“We are always blown away by the support this program gets in
Oahu. I’m sure this year will be no different,”...
By
now you’ve probably heard of the hottest new social media network –
Pinterest. Pinterest showed up in a big way in 2012 when it made
the comScore list of the top 50 websites with 25.3
million unique visitors.
In case you aren’t familiar with Pinterest, the site is essentially one big
online cork board. It allows users to “pin” images that they find
online, which then link back to the original website. Pins are
really just visual bookmarks, which are organized by “pinboards”
that typically have...
Have you ever traveled to a new city and wondered where you
could go, near your hotel, to get a good cup of coffee? Or maybe
you’ve been at work and when it was time for lunch you wanted to
try something other than your usual sandwich shop? There are a lot
of great mobile apps – including Yelp, FourSquare, and TripAdvisor
– that could help you find the perfect local business, but up until
recently Facebook did not have much to offer. That all changed when
Facebook rolled...
